SEWexo is an upper limb robotic exoskeleton for the rehabilitation purposes of post stroke patients. It has a two DOF movement at elbow and wrist joint and is controlled via a handheld joystick. | |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? | |
Stroke is the third most common cause of death and the first leading cause of disability in developing countries and about 350,000 new stroke patients are treated annually in Pakistan, which indicates the dire need of rehabilitation service. SEWexo is a small step in this cause. | |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? | |
Around 4.48 % of the Pakistan's Population is 65+ and an handsome no. are treated for the cardiovascular diseases. Including the 18% of the Rural crippled population, SEWexo can be beneficial for their rehabilitation. | |
How will the solution works | |
SEWexo has two DOF with two motors at elbow and wrist joints,operating via a DC battery source attached at the back.There are two modes of operation : Manual and Automatic. Manually the device can be controlled by the joystick. However, an ambitious design will be based upon Electromyography (EMG) to automatically actuate the arms and powering the motors at the necessary speed. In addition with the design based on Series Elastic Actuation (SEA), safety measures are also added via programming. | |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different | |
This technology is new in Pakistan but there is a device which provides the similar services , UB-AXO. Our solution is different and better because of it's light weight and safety features. SEWexo is under 3 kg with the payload of approx. 2kg with the added safety features for HRI. | |
