Abstract:
    PET is the most commonly used polymer for carbonated beverages. However it suffers from CO2 leakage and external O2 permeation, resulting in its early staleness. The project aims to resolve this issue
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    The current shelf life of a 250ml bottle is 35days, reason being the loss of 15% carbonation within the stipulated period. Our composition will improve the gas barrier properties of PET significantly by addition of a cost effective and bio-compatible nano filler.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   In addition to improving the barrier properties of PET, this project also focuses on improving the barrier properties of PP, the polymer used in making bottle caps. This would give beverage industry a great liberty in manufacturing the caps within the country instead of importing.
How will the solution works
    Nanofillers are a class of chemicals that can reduce the gas permeation through polymers by filling the gaps present in polymeric chains that gas molecules exploit.Steps involved in PET bottle fabrication are melting, injection molding and and blow molding, the idea is to insert the calculated quantity of nanofiller during the melt process just before the injection molding. Permeation could also be prevented from bottles via coating with high gas barrier PET films on lids and or bottles.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    There aren’t any competitors since the application of nanofillers is an emerging field. Our solution is quite unique in its own way, since it provides us with many advantages at a much-reduced cost with just a minor modification in the current bottle manufacturing process.
