Abstract:
    Our idea is an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that will offer a solution to the problems of power theft, energy crisis, and at the same time, provide relief to the consumer.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Pakistan’s power grid suffers badly from theft and line losses. In first nine months of 2018, power theft alone stood at over Rs 59b. For example, according to officials, Sukkur Electric Power Company faced Rs 9.5b theft with around 60 percent recovery. There is also a 6000MW Power Shortfall.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Global Smart Meter market held installations of nearly 88.2M in 2017. The market is expected to witness large roll outs and is estimated to reach $10.4B in 2022. In Pakistan alone, a $5B program, funded by Asian Development Bank, is underway, with first stage of $900m already rolled out.
How will the solution works
    While most smart meters use many hardware modules, we follow a software-based approach. Current and voltage sensors collect data from 3-phase power. A data acquisition card feeds the data to a single-board computer. This computer uses LabVIEW software to calculate not only consumption, but also power quality and fault statuses. Data is securely transmitted via encryption over wired connections, with almost no running cost. It is stored in an online database, which can be accessed by consumers.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Our competitors are major players in the industry who make state-of-the-art energy meters, like MicroTech and Vertex. However, our system has built-in power quality analysis which current meters lack. We also integrate data transfer through powerlines instead of GSM which is cheaper and more secure.
