Abstract:
    In this research work we are going to fabricate mixed matrix membrane for the separation of O2/N2, which can be used in artificial lungs to provide O2 to the blood and remove CO2 from the blood.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Artificial lungs also called blood oxygenators are used to provide oxygen to patients in acute lungs failure or as a bridge to lungs transplant in patients requiring chronic respiratory support, lungs rest and recovery, and used in cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries to provide oxygen to the patient.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   There are many diseases associated to lungs like chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma, acute lower respiratory tract infections, tuberculosis (TB), and lung cancer, because of the diseases lungs stop functioning and about more than 10 millions people die annually worldwide.
How will the solution works
    As the kinetic diameter of O2, N2 and CO2 are 3.46Å, 3.64Å and 3.30Å respectively, therefore the fabricated membrane have also the capability to allow CO2 to pass through it. The membrane will be coated by using vitamin E to reduce the oxidative stress. Blood will be flow from one side of the membrane and air in the other side. The membrane will allow O2 to diffuse down its concentration from the air to the blood while CO2 will diffuse down its concentration from blood to the air stream.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Research is going on worldwide to increase the permeability and selectivity of O2/N2 membranes for artificial lungs. Our solution has an advantage over others as it is economical and we are trying to achieve good selectivity and permeability for oxygen.
