Abstract:
    Nano Alumina-CNT membranes will be developed via powder metallurgy technique. Synthesised membranes would be tested to determine their heavy metal removal efficiency from drinking water.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Heavy metals are hazardous environmental pollutants mainly found in the vicinity of industrial and agricultural areas. Presence of these heavy metals in drinking water is a source of fatal diseases. Therefore, our aim is to remove these harmful metal cations using inorganic ceramic membranes.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   1/3 of annual deaths in Pakistan occur due to patients suffering from water related diseases. According to a study, 25.61% of the population in Pakistan have access to safe drinkable water. Potential benefactors of the synthesised membranes would thus be a large percentage of country‚Äôs population.
How will the solution works
    Alumina (Al2O3) powder shows high adsorption characteristic towards heavy metal (HM) cations. Similarly, Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) are also reported to have high adsorption affinity towards heavy metals. Homogenous powder mixture of Alumina reinforced with CNT would be used to synthesise porous ceramic membranes. These ceramic membranes will then be tested for their heavy metal removal capability for a particular heavy metal cation.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Al2O3 based membranes are thermally stable and filter smaller HM cations from water based on adsorption principle.Polymeric membranes are non-biodegradable and thermally unstable while RO based systems are costly, immobile and remove essential natural minerals such as Fe, Mg, Ca and Na from water.
