Abstract:
The 48 million tonnes of solid waste produced by Pakistan annually is a threat to the entire ecosystem. Our proposal manages this waste by converting it to fuel efficiently and in a short time period.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Huge amount of organic waste is produced daily, which is left untreated and is thrown into the environment. This waste can be used to produce fuel. Our proposal will not only reduce the amount of waste but also provide a renewable source of energy as well.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
The fuel produced could be used by all consumers but waste management is a generic problem that would directly benefit the environment by reducing the spread of disease, contamination of underground water, production of greenhouse gases and other numerous problems caused by improper waste disposal.
How will the solution works
Currently, biofuel is synthesized by two procedures. Fermentation is a time taking process and trans-esterification is a specific reaction to produce fuel. Merging the two processes will lead to reduction in time and increase the amount of compounds to which this process is applicable. In this process long macromolecular chains will be broken into relatively small chains of esters by microbes and this intermediate product will further be processed to fuel by trans-esterification.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
With reference to the process, there is no competitor as such because Pakistan lacks proper infrastructure for waste treatment. However, in terms of the final product, the competitors could be any fuel company that lacks the advantage of being eco-friendly that we possess.
