Abstract:
    Bio-influenced self healing concrete, utilizing domestic waste, addresses durability issues of concrete structures and greatly reduces carbon footprint hence a step towards sustainable development.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Construction sector contributes 20% towards carbon footprint in developed countries and in US building repair works costs $75 billion due to deterioration in concrete. 0.2% annual increase in urbanization in Pakistan demands more construction so landfills are required to dump domestic waste safely.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   construction industry: searching for material possibilities that are climate adaptable, retains mechanical properties for considerable period of time promoting sustainable development by reducing anthropogenic emissions.
How will the solution works
    Cracks in reinforced concrete structures increase the ingress of chlorides makes it susceptible to corrosion. Self healing by bacteria requires immobilizer Biochar (CO2 adsorbing ability) which keeps it dormant till cracks propagate upon which bacteria consumes CO2 and acts on precursor compound Calcium lactate to precipitate Calcite which fills cracks and reduce permeability. In this way service life of structure is increased and carbon footprint reduced promoting sustainability.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    In market admixtures are available to reduce permeability but they cannot increase the service life of building upon cracking. Conventional Crack repairing techniques provide short term solution but has tendency to develop cracks again. These commercial based products do not promote sustainability.
