Design and fabrication of a solar thermal water purification system for provision of clean drinking water by evaporation and condensation of sea water or polluted water from various sources | |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? | |
Availability of cheap, clean drinking water in water stressed areas of Pakistan. It is estimated that 44 percent of population in Pakistan does not have access to clean drinking water and almost 100 000 people die due to consumption of contaminated water. | |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? | |
Rural population and lower middle class communities of densely populated cities where there no availability of clean drinking water or where there is severe water shortage. around 40% of the population can benefit from this product | |
How will the solution works | |
A panel will be constructed with PVC pipes for frame and plastic sheet for cover. a black absorber mat will be placed inside the panel, to increase the surface area for absorption of water and water will run down the mat. Solar radiation incident on the panel will cause the water in mat to evaporate and form vapors. these vapors will travel towards the plastic surfaces of the panel and condense due to temperature difference. the condensed water will be collected at the bottom end of the panel | |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different | |
there are currently no products in market that have given such a solution. this solution is environmentally friendly as there are no green house gas emissions, it operates at very low costs hence a maximum people can benefit from it. Also it is potable and produces 15 - 20 liters of water in a day. | |
