Abstract:
    CO2 is the dominant greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. Our study investigates the removal characteristics of CO2 using amine modified biochar spun into fibres through electrospinning.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Pakistan is the 7th most vulnerable country to climate change. To combat this effect, we aim to modify existing billboards by treating panaflex fabric using biochar nano fibres in order for them to adsorb CO2 from air. Such billboards will be doing the job of several trees without using up water.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Those residing a few blocks near the modified billboard will breathe in pure air (200+). Biochar being a low cost alternate, benefits the industries which use conventional CO2 removal techniques such as charcoal / scrubbers. Adsorbed CO2 can be resold as carbonates and formic acid.
How will the solution works
    We will obtain biochar nano fibres through the process of electrospinning. Once air is allowed to pass through the panaflex, biochar will adsorb carbon dioxide molecules from the air. Biochar provides sufficient active sites, surface area and porosity to accommodate CO2 capture. Adsorption efficiency increases with decreasing temperatures. Through testing we will determine how long it will take for the panaflex to reach its maximum adsorption capacity.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Advertisements displayed on billboards have the sole aim of attracting customers, with our modification they will become agents of environmental change as well. Synthesising nanofibers from biochar increases porosity which provides more sites for CO2 capture than other forms of biochar used before.
