Abstract:
The project involves developing a low cost monitoring solution to better estimate fruit harvesting times which can help improve their shelf life and ensure better eating quality.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Pakistan's mango exports plummeted to 65,000 tons in 2014 from a high of 100,000 tons. Moreover, Pakistani mangoes faced an imminent ban from the EU due to poor quality. To counter this, prediction based harvesting can be utilized to balance fruit's quality of consumption with its shelf life.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
The project can be beneficial to both fruit producers as well as the state due to its potential to rake in more profits as more of the product makes it to end consumers. It also helps standardize the process of fruit separation into various categories based on objective criteria.
How will the solution works
The solution consists of designing a low cost spectrometer optimized for specific wavelengths to monitor fruit parameters such as total soluble solids or acidity. These parameters have been shown to have a direct linkage with fruit maturity and therefore can be used to accurately predict harvest times. These results are communicated by an app to keep track of all the data and serve as a decision aid tool by telling exactly when to harvest fruit ensuring optimum balance of quality and shelf life.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Agriculture market in Pakistan has not seen much modernization, therefore there is little to no competition in the local market. Internationally, this idea has been implemented but not for the mango varieties of Chaunsa and Sindhiri, and rarely comes with a decision aid tool in the form of an app.
