Abstract:
    Conventional ACs are causing destruction of ozone layer and global warming. They have substantially high energy requirements. We are providing cheap eco-friendly alternative which uses solar energy.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    In hot humid climate, health and comfort suffer because current HVAC systems do not control humidity effectively and consume 40% of energy in building. Moreover, working fluids often are not environment friendly. Hence, an alternate cheaper, effective and environment friendly system is needed.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   38 of the largest 50 cities are in warm climates and 24 of those are in developing countries. Household air conditioners in the subcontinent today account for 2% and are growing every year. Our idea would meet the cooling requirements without the huge initial costs while being eco-friendly.
How will the solution works
    We are proposing a new design of desiccant based evaporative cooling which runs primarily on solar energy. The desiccant system would dehumidify the air and this dehumidified air can be effectively cooled using a setup of evaporative coolers which only use water and air as their working fluids. A solar air heater would enhance the temperature of incoming ambient air and this air will be used for the regeneration for desiccant system. In this way we can acheive total environment friendly cooling.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Air-conditioning systems are vapor compression-based systems that not only have low efficiency but also use refrigerants like CFCs, which are one of the main sources of ozone layer depletion. Our aim is to cool the air directly without the use of refrigerants through direct/indirect evaporation.
