Abstract:
    The project aims to provide a more bio-mimetic prosthetic solution to lower leg amputees by providing extra energy a real foot creates at certain parts of gait, thus improving the amputees' lifestyle.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Ankle-Foot Prosthesis in Pakistan is mostly passive, which not only limit an amputee to slow walking, but they also cause complications such as osteoarthritis. With 50.1% amputations requiring below-knee amputation in Pakistan, lives of many amputees can improve with our idea.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Immediate benefactors: Military below knee amputees- about 200 Long-term benefactors: Pakistani below knee amputees - more than 5000 *These amounts have been estimated from available research papers on demographics of Pakistani amputees. True amount would be much larger.
How will the solution works
    It uses a series-elastic actuator (SEA) to modulate the prosthetic ankle's stiffness and acts as Achilles tendon. There are two position sensors: One provides current ankle position, while both are used to determine ankle torque. The IMU provides the trajectory and velocities of the prosthesis used to determine the gait, stage of the gait, and walking speed according to which the SEA modulates stiffness or the position of ankle directly. It can be improved to detect surface terrain and slope.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Our competitors would be the ones selling conventional passive ankle foot prosthesis. Our solution is more bio-mimetic, gives more freedom to the wear, allows faster walking speeds, and reduces risks of medical complications of amputees such as osteoarthritis.
