Abstract:
We want to design a crash detection system for a bike rider that automatically deploys the airbag fitted in their garment in event of an accident.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
According to a 2014 WHO report, 2.69% of Pakistanis die due to road accidents each year and more than 50% of road accidents involve motorbikes. Bikers are in greater need of safety gear because they sustain more frequent and serious injuries compared to car drivers. So rider safety is imperative!
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Pakistan is the 5th largest motorcycle market in the world. This is one of the main means of conveyance for the entire lower middle class. With such huge numbers of motorcyclists and their lack of safety, an affordable airbag deployment system would benefit a large section of the population.
How will the solution works
A crash detection unit will be integrated with an airbag deployment system in the rider's garment. It will monitor a set of real time parameters like the biker’s portrait position, acceleration etc. and send information to a processing unit. The processor will compare the signals to threshold levels, and in event of a crash, will send off an indicator that will in turn deploy the airbag fitted inside the garment.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Such safety jackets have been developed by motorsport companies like Alpinestars, Dane etc. but are not locally manufactured in Pakistan. If imported, they are not affordable. Our solution will be more accurate and mainly low-cost so that it can benefit the targeted community (lower middle class).
