Abstract:
    Magnetrons will be used to generate plasma i.e. ionized gas containing the element to be diffused into the metal surface as a component to harden the surface of the sample as compared to its core.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    The nitriding process is rare in Pakistan and only few companies are performing the process whereas the applications are many and not all demands can be met. Hence, many parts are imported that increase cost drastically. There is, thus a need of a cheaper, portable and easy to operate equipment.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   The industries using any products that require pre-surface treatment will benefit from the project such as automobile industries, manufacturing industry concerned with applications such as elevators, theaters, airport etc.
How will the solution works
    The process involves the focusing of microwaves generated from 800 Watts Magnetron using wave guide into a quartz tube. The quartz tube is connected with the Ammonia gas input. Microwaves will ionize the gas to produce plasma which has a very high temperature. The plasma contains gaseous Nitrogen ions. When the plasma is focused on the metal sample, at high temperatures, the nitrogen diffuses into the surface of metal, increasing the hardness of the surface due to presence of diffused nitrogen.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    The main industries that use the process are Millat Industries and Metal Engineering Works. However, their equipment is expensive and cumbersome. Whereas our project aims to provide a simple, portable and cheap method.
