Abstract:
    We aim to develop an eco-friendly packaging material by some natural sources that will help us in extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables as well as imparting beneficial features.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    According to FAO, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted annually and population is expected to reach 10.5 billion by 2050. Ensuring food safety will help in increasing the income of producers and overcoming world hunger.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Packaging industries, fruits and vegetables producers, transporters, vendors and consumers.
How will the solution works
    Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide that helps in preventing spoilage of food due to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. A film prepared of chitosan will be used to coat the fruits and vegetables. The coating retards the ripening and and being waterproof agent controls the moisture content. It also improves durability, reduce browning, retain vitamin C content, total phenolic and chlorophyll content.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    There are no direct competitors but packaging industries using plastic. Plastic is not biodegradable and poses a great threat to the environment, being a major cause of pollution. Chitosan is a polysaccharide and it is biodegradable and non-toxic. Our product is bio-compatible and eco-friendly.
