Abstract:
    Bearing in mind the poor sanitation prevalent in our country, we have decided to provide an economically feasible and environmentally friendly solution for the treatment of domestic wastewater.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Unfortunately, 68 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation in Pakistan and nearly 19,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. The absence of proper wastewater treatment plants are the cause of these petrifying statistics.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   People have a right to clean water and sanitation, agreed? Yet, we are deprived of such basic needs. While visiting Jatoi, a tehsil in Muzaffargarh, we witnessed how the entire community was practically living in their own domestic waste. Such a solution will benefit all communities in Pakistan.
How will the solution works
    Keeping in mind the alarming energy crisis our country is facing, we have opted for anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater. We shall be using an anaerobic fluidised bed reactor. The media tested will be rubber and sand, and the rubber shall be obtained from spent tires thus encouraging the concept of reuse and recycle. The effluent will meet the NEQS standards and can be used for agricultural purposes. The technology will also produce biogas, thus becoming an energy positive system!
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Currently, there is minimal research on the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater and no such plant is in place - not even in the capital city of our country. We have proposed using rubber and sand as the media - both have negligible cost!
