Abstract:
    The project will develop efficient bioreactor for optimized growth of freshwater microalgae, Chlorella Vulgaris and extraction of cancer curing pigment, Carotenoid, will be done from the grown algae.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    WHO report claims 8.8 million deaths around the globe occur due to cancer out of which 70% befall in developing countries. Cancer toxicology screening takes up to 2 years and the process incurs a heavy amount of $ 2 million. Hence algae provides a solution for cheap and natural prevention of cancer.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   The 65 pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan are the main benefactors of this project since they can use the bioreactor to optimize microalgae growth for Carotenoid extraction to prepare supplements from it and send it out in the healthcare segment to combat 0.3 million cancer cases in Pakistan.
How will the solution works
    Pure culture of Chlorella Vulgaris will be obtained and stock culture will be prepared. Stock culture will then be pressed on a porous substrate membrane and will be arranged in the bioreactor for its growth in immobilized phase. Bioreactor is made up of polyethylene cylinders and is supplied with CO2 through air pump while the nutrient medium is sprayed via peristaltic pump. The algae biomass will then be used to extract carotenoids via super critical extraction as well as solvent extraction.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Freshwater microalgae and subsequent Carotenoid extraction from it has not yet been explored by industries in Pakistan and hence the solution that we are proposing is completely innovative and there are no competitors in the market.
