Abstract:
Biological pesticide (Bio-Pesticides) is one of the most promising alternatives over conventional chemical pesticides, which offers less or no harm to the environments and biota. Bio-Pesticides are used to control pests, pathogens and weeds by a variety of mechanisms by inhibiting growth, feeding, development or reproduction of a pest or pathogen. Bacillus thuringiensis (commonly known as Bt) is an insecticidal Gram-positive spore-forming bacterium producing proteins called delta-endotoxins (δ-endotoxin) toxic to pests. Bt is a naturally occurring bacterium common in soils throughout the world. It is active against more than 150 species of insect pests. The idea is toward formulation of biocontrol products for use against diseases (biofungicides), weeds (bioherbicides), and insect pests (bioinsectitides). There is great potential for exploitation of bacterial derived bio-pesticides in plant protection. Therefore, the use of Bio-Pesticides can solve the pest issue but also reduces the burden of synthetic chemicals manufacturing, carbon footprints involved and their toxic effects on environment, humans and ecological system.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
The current use of pesticides in Pakistan is about 1,30,000 metric tons of which approximately 90 per cent is applied on cotton, rice, fruits and vegetables. The wide use of chemical based pesticides in agriculture has contaminated the highly value-added commodities like rice, cotton, vegetables and
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
In the few last decades due to socio-economic, environmental, and public concerns over the use of anthropogenic pesticides, the importance of microbial derived bio-pesticides has received currency among food producers. Pakistan has basically an agrarian background and agriculture is mainstay of our
How will the solution works
Their commercial scale production of bio-pesticides involves several but relatively simple and environment-friendly steps. Firstly, it involves the investigation of target pests and its habitat and all those biotic and abiotic factors which may influence its population. During this step, it is important to identify microbial pathogens. Isolation of microbes will be carried out from its habitat and from the body of diseased insects which undergoes the purification of cultures under highly sophist
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Chemical pesticide companies seems to be the competitors. As the farmers, it's not a question of whether they are keen; they are simply not aware of the hazards of the chemical commodities used. Farmers need to be educated about why they should not use chemical pesticides. The use of bio-pesticides
