Abstract:
We intend to develop a roadside wind turbine which would harness wind potential generated by automobiles, and utilize that energy to power street lights, thus reducing the load on the power grid.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Pakistan being a signatory of Paris accord, needs to control it's carbon footprint. Pakistan also faces an energy shortfall of 4500-5000 MW. Furthermore, the Government of Pakistan wants 5% of total national power generation capacity to be generated through renewable energy by the year 2030.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Our beneficiaries may include government or private road construction projects, housing communities constructors and road development authorities. Furthermore, Ministry of Energy, Power Division can benefit from our turbines.
How will the solution works
The vertical axis wind turbine will be placed on a road divider alongside the street lights. Its rotor would utilize the kinetic energy of wind flux generated by cars as well as natural wind. This rotational energy is further converted into electricity through a generator, which is used to power lights on light poles. Our design of airfoil blades will result in optimum wind gust utilization and assure stability of the structure.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Similar projects for the lightening of light poles are being executed in Lahore and Karachi, but these projects are dependent on solar panels. We aim to develop an unprecedented vertical axis wind turbine in Pakistan which would efficiently harness the otherwise wasted wind energy on roads.
