Abstract:
    SPEAK is a Brain-Computer interface that enables communication via speech using the EEG signals using P300 speller. This system aids persons who are unable to communicate via conventional methods.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    People with severe motor impairment such as paralysis and ALS who need assisted communication have available options like robotic arm or computer mouse but, speech remains the most natural way of communication. SPEAK aims to help the 14Lac people of Pakistan who are affected by Paralysis.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. ALS affected individuals may eventually lose the ability to initiate and control all voluntary movement and often become completely paralyzed. 30k people are affected by ALS in US. SPEAK aims to help those.
How will the solution works
    We will be using a P300 speller i.e ERP (Event related potential) which evokes a signal when a particular event occurs. A 6x6 matrix of characters and digits will be displayed on a screen and characters will blink at certain random frequency. User has to focus on a particular character that he wants to spell which creates a peak in the EEG signal. This peak is used to determine the character thought by the person. Atlast the compiled word will be given to google speech API for speech conversion.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Speak gives the motor impaired patients the ability to communicate via speech. All the other current solutions only allow the patients to move robots in 4 possible directions etc.
