Abstract:
    The project includes the design and development of an electronic travel aid for blind people, to help them with their mobility and avoid obstacles in their path, through tactile feedback system.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Blind people are a neglected part of the society. This can be seen by the fact that even in 21st century almost all of them still use white cane to navigate around which is a very old technique. It was developed in 1921 and is still the same to this date. Now is the time to do something for them.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   This project is meant for the blind people. There are around 36 million people around the world that are completely blind. So, in theory all 36 million of them will benefit from it. The project aims to make it their necessity, not a luxury.
How will the solution works
    The design contains multiple ultrasonic sensors attached to the persons body, gathering the distance information. The ultrasonic sensors are sequentially triggered to avoid interference. The data is then fed to the microcontroller which processes the information. Attached to the microcontroller are multiple vibration motors which are used as a feedback. The microcontroller after processing drives the motors in such a harmony, that gives the blind person a depth perception of what’s ahead.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    There are products available in the market like, Navbelt, NAVI, VOICE. But most of them are either very expensive or outdated and ergonomically poor. Our solution includes tactile feedback system through vibration motors, which unlike the others doesn’t interfere the audio of the surroundings.
