Abstract:
    Synthetic Antimicrobial Peptides(amps) against alarming antibiotic resistant bacteria (superbugs). Superbugs infections are an emerging cause for increasing the death toll, yearly.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Antibiotics resistance is among the urgent threats to the public health. Infections that were once cured by antibiotics are now untreatable, rendering bacteria more pathogenicity and virulence. Each year, 33,000 people die in the Europe due to superbugs infections. Bacteria acquires resistance fast.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Drug resistance infections can kill an extra 10m people a year worldwide, more than currently dying from cancer by 2050. Global Antimicrobial Surveillance System (GLASS) reveals widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance among 500 000 people with suspected bacterial infections in 22 countries.
How will the solution works
    AMPs work as single anti-infective agents.Found naturally and can be artificially synthesized while targeting specific functions of bacterial pathogenesis. Bacteria resists antibiotics by biofilm formation, amps prevents biofilms. Due to their cationic nature and hydrophobicity amps can dissipate the electrochemical gradient across microbial plasma membranes. They are broadspectrum, can act as immunostimulatory agents that enhance natural innate immunity. Bacterial genome is also a target.
