Abstract:
    Design and manufacturing of a direct carbon fuel cell that can be used with a variety of fuel that includes but is not limited to carbon, hydrogen, syngas and methane.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Fuel cells have many advantages over combustion engines including much higher efficiency (80% compared to 60%) and a much cleaner exhaust. Pakistan is in dire need of clean and efficient utilization of coal reserves (87 billion metric tonnes) that will have less diverse effects on the environment.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Industries that utilize direct burning of coal (only 40% efficient) to produce energy for various purposes are in dire need of direct carbon fuel cells. . In terms of cost, industries can produce double the amount of energy at same cost using direct carbon fuel cells, and cleaner too.
How will the solution works
    The CO fuel is generated by the reverse Boudouard reaction in the dry gasifier. The reaction uses carbon(in the form of coal) to produce syngas. CO travels to anode and is oxidized to CO. Meanwhile, at the cathode, oxygen gets reduced to oxygen ions. Yttria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is used as an electrolyte in this process which ensures maximum mobility of ions. Ni-YSZ and strontium doped lanthanum manganate are used as anode and cathode respectively to sustain high temperature of 700 celcius
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    The industries producing power by burning coal are our competitors. The efficiency of the process is 30-40% because the combustion process is inefficient. The fuel cell almost doubles the efficiency.
