Abstract:
    Obtaining blood & donors is an excruciating task: it requires consent & screening. Our solution generates synthetic red blood cells from stem cells, which can be mass produced plus are pure of disease
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Despite 70% of the population being<29 yrs, only 10% blood comes from voluntary donors. 90% comes from unsafe family member replacement donations. In Pak, >1.5 million pints of blood are collected annually. However, compared to 82% population, only 36% donations are made; a dire need to fix this gap
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Thalassemia- 100,000 Patients Trauma victims- 146000 deaths & 2.8 mil. traffic accident injuries Women with pregnancy complications 50% anemic, (1 in 89 Pakistani women die of childbirth complications) Anemic & malnourished children 61% Cancer patients & those undergoing complex medical treatments
How will the solution works
    Stem cells are first immortalized by pluripotent stem cell technology. By certain signaling pathways, stem cells are aimed to be converted to RBCs. However, 70% remain in the proerythroblast (immature) stage. By targetting this 70 % with the help of erythropoiesis inducers, RBC's can be produced catered specifically to each blood type, especially the rare blood types that are hardly donated. This technique results in disease-free RBC's that can be mass produced to fill in the gap of donors.

    Blood banks and registered professional blood donors. A regenatuve medicinal technique that can be mass produced that does not need to be extensively screened for diseases such as HIV and HCV etc.
