Abstract:
    Development of an above-knee prosthesis that optimally balances the trade-off between price and functionality, to deliver a high-performance product accessible to almost everyone who needs it.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Above-knee prosthetic devices proposed in recent times have either been too expensive or too primitive. As per the world bank, 90 - 95 % of amputees in developing countries don't receive any prostheses, with only 20% able to afford them. There's a need for low-cost, superior-performance devices.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   There are an estimated 6.7 million above-knee amputees in Asia, with a majority living in India and China. Since living conditions in Pakistan are similar, with the added factor of war, it would be safe to say that above-knee amputees are at least just as prevalent here.
How will the solution works
    Active prostheses, due the presence of active elements such as high-torque motors and high-voltage batteries, are heavy, difficult to maintain, and very expensive. Purely passive ones allow walking at fixed speeds and that too at a high metabolic cost. We aim to make a semi-active device that doesn't have a high dependency on active elements, yet still allows for walking at different speeds through control over mechanical element parameters such as spring stiffness and damping coefficient.
